Marie A. Causland
Ralph J. Hatton and Theresa M. Hatton (née McKeon) welcomed their daughter, Marie Ann, into the world on February 27, 1952 in Missoula, Montana. Marie had the indomitable spirit to take on the task of keeping up with her four older brothers—Albert, Patrick, Ralph, and Floyd—becoming a tomboy, playing sports, and managing a walking speed of someone twice her height. Her whole life she maintained her great love for Montana and the big sky outdoors it offered. Marie’s parents had two more girls after her: Catherine and Regina. Among Marie’s fondest memories from childhood was her family regularly praying the Rosary together.
When Marie was 10 years old, her family moved to Orange County, California. She graduated from Magnolia High School in Anaheim, and later took classes at a local community college.
Through her brother, Albert, Marie met Archie S. Causland, Jr. Archie was smitten with Marie and her twinkling Irish eyes upon their first meeting. They married later that year. Archie and Marie joyfully welcomed two daughters during their marriage, Shannon and Tara. Marie loved her girls and spending time with them. Her Catholic Christian faith and her family were the most cherished parts of her life.
Archie and Marie moved their family to Montana, making a home for themselves in the Bitterroot Valley. Marie loved the the hills, the garden, the animals, and any opportunity to go fishing like she had done with her dad while growing up. She helped with Girl Scouts and led the local 4-H Club for a number of years. Marie began her 30-year career with the U.S. Postal Service while in Montana before transferring to Kirkland, Washington.
Marie became a longtime parishioner at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church in Bothell, Washington. She had many wonderful friends in her church community and participated in the women’s fellowship and Rosary prayer group. Marie loved Irish music, watching birds, going for walks, eating out with friends and family, laughter, huckleberries, learning new things, and nature. She loved Jesus and spent many hours in retirement praying and learning more about her faith. She loved her grandchildren, lighting up whenever she saw them and praying for them devotedly. She was also the best possible grandmama to her daughter’s bunny, for whom she lovingly helped care during his elderly years.
Marie’s husband, Archie, passed away just a few months before their 50th wedding anniversary. After his passing, she battled cancer successfully with treatment for the last four years. Getting sick during a trip in April unfortunately led to an unexpected and sudden deterioration of her health. Marie passed from this life on May 30, 2026. She said she was ready to go to heaven and that Jesus was ready for her. Those who love her were not ready to let her go. During her last hours on this earth, Marie’s two daughters, her brother Pat, and his eldest son prayed with her, told her how much we love her, and wished things were different.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, three brothers, two sisters, and one nephew. She is survived by one brother, three sisters-in-law, her two daughters, her son-in-law, two grandchildren, and many nephews and nieces. A Funeral Mass was held for her on July 9th, celebrated by Fr. Lucio Villalobos, MSpS. Her remains were interred with her husband’s at Tahoma National Cemetery in a ceremony on July 13th presided over by longtime family friend, Fr. Augustine Hilander, O.P. She was, is, and forever will be a beloved wife, mother, aunt, sister, grandmother, and friend. May she rest in the eternal peace of the Lord. In her memory, donations may be made to the St. Vincent de Paul Society chapter at St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church at 2316 180th St. SE, Bothell, WA 98012.
