Michael Chen

A devoted father, loving husband, proud grandfather, loyal friend and dutiful son and brother, Mike Chen passed away on April 19th. His health had worsened in recent months, after initially suffering a stroke ten years ago. His wife Alice田愛琴, along with his loved ones, did everything possible to ensure his independence and comfort at home throughout. She and their children, and their respective families, survive him: Andrew 陳耕德, Christel, Calvin 陳丹田, Mathilda 陳巧田 and Clarisse陳佳田of London, England; Henry 陳耕堂,  Lilybelle, Liarabelle 陳美安, Lian 陳力安and Hanabelle 陳海安of Whittier, California; and Tiffany陳家安, Adam and Kyle 陳田of Kirkland, Washington. He is also survived by his brothers Jerry 陳國光 and Henry 陳國輝, his sister 李津生, and their families. His parents, Henry陳景瀛 and 邱文蘭, preceded him in death.

Mike was born in Tianjin, China and grew up in Taipei, Taiwan. He graduated from the National Taiwan University in 1968 and then pursued graduate studies at Yale University and Duke University. He became a U.S. citizen after settling in Chicago, Illinois, in 1975, where he raised his family, had a career in data analysis and telecommunications, and was part of the local Chinese-American community. His family was always his priority, and he spent countless hours every week ensuring that his children were able to participate in sports and music lessons, pursue academic opportunities, and attend weekend Chinese school. For vacations, the family usually went on highly anticipated trips to visit Mike’s parents, his brothers and their families in Michigan, where the kids could play with their grandparents, uncles, aunts and cousins. When the kids had grown, he finally had time to pursue his interests in Buddhism and tai chi, and to ardently follow the Chicago Bulls.

A memorial service will be held both in-person and online on Sunday April 25th from 10 AM – noon Pacific Standard Time. In order to manage on-line traffic and due to the time difference with Taiwan, immediate family and those in Taiwan are asked to join at 10 AM, and more local friends to wait (if possible) and join at 10:45 AM. For those who attend in person, there will be breakout rooms with the chance to talk to the family and view Mike if desired.
