Evelyn S. Stewart, a life long resident of Seattle and a proud, passionate member of the city’s Pacific fishing community as a boat owner, passed away on June 30, 2018 after a brief illness. She was 69.

Born on August 7, 1948, in Seattle, Evie graduated from Ballard High School in 1966. During her teens, she worked in a Seattle fish cannery and later as a shipboard cook on her boats in Alaska, a role that brought her many admirers. Many said she was the Pacific fleets’ best chef. Along with her husband of 50 years, Gary Stewart, Evie owned crab boats including the Polar Lady.

A devoted member of the Catholic faith, Evie worked as a Eucharistic minister at her home parish, Christ the King, in Seattle’s Broadview neighborhood. She was also a longtime member of the Daughters of Norway.

She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Gary; daughter Shannon (m. Jeff Morehouse); son Kjell; sisters Debora (Peterson) and Joyce (Johanson); grandchildren Jake, Grace, Dennis and Chad (Morehouse), great-grandson Brody, many nieces and nephews, many cousins and many lifelong friends. She was preceded in death by her sister Audrey (Goers), and parents Henry and Berniece (Cibos) Pedersen. Her family was with her at the end.

The family will hold a small, private funeral this week. Her family and friends will honor her in August, details to be announced. In lieu of flowers, donations to Seattle Children’s Hospital are welcome.
