Dave Haugen

C. David (Dave) Haugen passed away peacefully at home January 11th 2018, surrounded by his loving family. Dave is survived by his wife Carol Ann, daughter Debbie Marshall (Bob), son Steve Haugen, four grandsons – Joe and Ben Rowland (Kristin), CJ and Tyler Haugen (Tia), two great granddaughters, niece Sharon Perry (Jack), nephew David Burgess, four stepchildren – Pat, Mark, Laurie and Jay McLoughlin, and seven step-grandkids. He is preceded in death by his parents, Chris Bertram Haugen and Opal Lanam Haugen, and his sister and brother-in-law, Mary Lou and Bob Burgess, and nephew, Bobby Burgess.

Born at Ballard Hospital in Seattle, his family moved to Bothell when he was 8, where he grew up, graduating from Bothell High School in 1951.

He learned the construction trade working at his father Chris’s side. He moved away to serve in the Navy, from 1951-1955 during the Korean conflict. While in the Navy, he was a Metalsmith 2nd Class on the repair ship U.S.S. Delta AR-9 and traveled throughout the Pacific. Upon his return to Bothell he worked a short time as a draftsman at Boeing in Everett, but found construction to be his passion. He followed in his father’s footsteps by starting his own construction company, C.D. Haugen Construction, and left his fingerprint on many residential homes and commercial buildings throughout the Bothell/Kenmore/Seattle area from the mid 1950’s up to 1995. He spent 3 years serving as a volunteer fireman, was a member of the Carpenter’s Union and a member of the Lake City Elks. When he wasn’t building or putting out fires, he raced Go-Karts, mini Hydroplanes, enjoyed snowmobiling and spent time at Wapato Point with many dear friends.

Dave met the love of his life, Carol Ann Nelson McLoughlin, in 1983, they married in 1986. Dave and Carol bought a 14 acre slice of heaven on the Chewuck River in Winthrop in 1987 and spent many weekends clearing and building a “cabin” the entire family enjoyed. Upon their retirement in 1995, they sold their home in Kenmore and this long time Bothell boy moved with his wife to their cabin in Winthrop, where they lived while building an addition – their dream home on the river. Retirement life was grand – snowmobiling in the winter, golfing all summer, floating and fishing in their river, RV’ing with special friends and Dave keeping up the acreage on his “Deer John”. He also built his giant garage/shop where he tinkered on automobiles, fixed everything and built whatever anyone needed with his carpentry skills. He joined the Winthrop Kiwanis and headed up the building team. Here he again left his fingerprint on many community projects, from the bleachers and bathrooms at the ballfield, to the log picnic shelter by the Red Barn, to Heckendorn Playfield and the log entrance to Winthrop from the North Cascades Highway. His Kiwanian building team also saved the kids at the library by screening in the reading porch to keep the mosquitoes away!

In 2003, Carol was diagnosed with a life-threatening illness and Dave was there for her every step of the way, taking great care with the many details and tasks to assist with her recovery. That he was there for her when she really needed him was a testimony of their deep love and friendship.

Dave and Carol sold the Winthrop homestead in 2013 and moved to Wenatchee for three years. They returned to Bothell in June of 2017. Dave was forever the storyteller and master joke teller. As long as you had an ear to listen, he had a story to tell. His memory was amazing as well, recalling names and places with incredible accuracy, as far back as early childhood. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Dave June 2nd, 2pm to 4pm at Woodland Terrace, 17502 102nd Ave. NE, Bothell.
