Susan Kay Shardelman

Susan Kay Shardelman quietly and peacefully slipped away to be with her Heavenly Father on November 24, 2017. After an extended hospital stay due to declining health, and complications from rheumatoid arthritis, she came home on hospice to spend her final days surrounded by family and friends, and enjoying the view of the mountain she loved, Mt Si.

Sue was born December 5, 1961 at Nelems Hospital in Snoqualmie, WA to Merle and Betty Shardelman. She lived in Snoqualmie with the exception of her college experience at Pacific Lutheran University at which she earned a degree in psychology, and Seattle University where she earned her masters degree. She used these skills during her employment at Easter Seals Society, and Weyerhaeuser Lumber Company. She is a lifetime member of Mount Si Lutheran Church in North Bend. After returning home from college, Sue dove in to volunteer opportunities at the church, becoming one of the youngest, and the second woman, Church Council President at Mt Si. She continued to serve on many boards and committees at the church, managing the adult education program, and led numerous Bible studies. In 2012 Sue created a Chronic Conditions Support Group, for those coping with a chronic condition, age related issues, and their caregivers to meet and provide support for each other. She has created a legacy of caring commitment to her family, her friends, and mostly her God. She allowed God to use her, along with her disabilities, to touch the people around her and reflect His good work in her. In spite of a lifelong battle with rheumatoid arthritis, (she was diagnosed at 2 years old), she muscled through the constant pain with a smile on her face, and didn’t let it slow her down.

Susan is survived by her mother, Betty Shardelman of Snoqualmie, brother, Dale Shardelman of Snoqualmie, brother, William (Bill) Shardelman of North Bend, and sister, Becki (Steve) Thomas, nephew, Jake Thomas and many faithful friends.

A memorial service will be held for Sue on Saturday, Dec 23, 2017 @ 1pm at Mount Si Lutheran Church in North Bend. A reception for all in attendance will follow after the service. There will also be a smaller graveside service @ Cedar Lawns Cemetery in Redmond, WA on Thursday, Dec 28, 2017 @ 1pm.

Donations may be made in Sue’s honor to the Arthritis Foundation or Mt Si Lutheran Church.

Sue was a very special woman! All that she did for others was a great gift! Her strength and laughter thru her journey of pain makes me so proud to have met her, even but for a brief moment. But she lives on in her sister Becki, who brings such joy, love & caring
to every one she meets. That is an amazing legacy! May the family share a time of healing this holiday season.

I am so sad to hear of Sue’s passing and so glad to know that she is know with the Lord. We kept in touch in recent years, mostly through Christmas Cards with letters enclosed. I will miss hearing from her each year.
I pray for peace for family members who I know will miss her greatly.
