Lois was one of nine children born to Anna and Olin Button with one surviving brother, Russell Button who resides in Lawrence.

She met the love of her life, Leslie Hardtarfer, in high school, married him and moved to Wichita, Kansas, where he found work at Boeing. They raised 3 daughters and were active members of the community.

In 1968, they moved to Everett, where Lois continued as a homemaker and mother.
