Herbert Willdon Barkuloo

BarkulooHerbert Willdon Barkuloo, wonderful dad and husband, was born on May 7, 1926 in Yakima, Washington and peacefully completed his journey on earth on February 15, 2016, with his family at his side. He was a devoted husband to his wife, Gloria, and an adoring father to his three daughters, Kathy (Don, d., 2013), Mary (Marv) and Kim (Pierre). He was a strong force in guiding his daughters through their lives and was so proud of his family’s successes. Herb was passionate about education, in particular the education of Deaf children. He began his career in Deaf education in Portland, Oregon in 1964, continuing in Pittsburgh, Pa where he earned his PhD. He brought his vision and expertise to the Seattle School District in 1969. In his career, he was most proud that, he, along with Viewridge principal, Bob Lukov, integrated Sign Language into the Program for the Deaf in Seattle.

He remained in the school district as a respected leader until his retirement in 1987.

After retirement he enjoyed cruising to many parts of the world with Gloria. He also loved the ongoing camaraderie of his poker buddies, volunteering at the neighborhood elementary school and volunteering with senior citizens.

In his final years, in addition to his family, he was lovingly sustained by his caregivers and the Group Health hospice team who helped him to live out his remaining days surrounded by unconditional love. Kathy and Kim are especially grateful to their sister, Mary, for her undivided attention to their parents care in the last four years.

Herb leaves behind his legacy of kindness and grace in the hearts and minds of his family and friends.

Herb was preceded in death by his parents, Herbert, Sr. and Agnes Barkuloo and his sister, Gracia Barkuloo Wegner.
