John Joseph Sekreta, Sr.
Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather John Sekreta, Sr. passed away peacefully on September 15, 2010. Papa John was born on December 3, 1919 in New York City to Nicholas and Mary Sekreta. He served his country for 24 years, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer. Following his retirement from the Navy, he graduated from San Jose State University, and taught graphic arts both at San Jose State and in high schools in California. He was an avid bowler, reader of non-fiction, and lifetime Yankees fan.
He was a member of Eta Pi Tau, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fleet Reserve Association, San Jose State Alumni, and St. Agnes Alumni. A founding member of St. Elizabeth Ann Seton parish in Mill Creek, he was active in church and Knights of Columbus activities.
After retiring to the Seattle area, he used his woodworking and craft skills building many projects to benefit Children’s Hospital. He enjoyed cooking, yard work and playing pinochle.
He is survived by his loving wife of 65 years Elizabeth; children John (Kathleen) and Kathleen (Donn), grandchildren Jennifer (Rob), Colleen (Steve), Deborah, Meghan, Kristin, and Emily; great grandchildren Derek, Sarah, Margaret, and Olivia; brothers Joseph, Martin, Nicholas and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by siblings Nellie, Frank, Edward, Milton, Eva and a sister who died at birth.
He will be missed by many family and friends.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Jude’s Catholic Church, Redmond at 11 AM Tuesday, Sept. 21. Reception immediately following the service. Military interment at Holyrood Catholic Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Seattle Children’s Hospital.
