DEFINITION OF DIRECT CREMATION AS PROVIDED BY THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION

The body is cremated shortly after death, without embalming. The cremated remains are placed in an urn or other container. No viewing or visitation is involved, although a memorial service may be held, with or without the cremated remains present. The remains can be kept in the home, buried or placed in a crypt or niche in a cemetery, or buried or scattered in a favorite spot. Direct cremation usually costs less than the “traditional,” full-service funeral. Costs include the funeral home’s basic services fee, as well as transportation and care of the body. A crematory fee may be included or, if the funeral home does not own the crematory, the fee may be added on. There also will be a charge for an urn or other container. The cost of a cemetery plot or crypt is included only if the remains are buried or entombed.

Funeral providers who offer direct cremations also must offer to provide an alternative container that can be used in place of a casket.

DEFINITION OF BIOCHEMICAL HYDROLYSIS AS CONTAINED IN THE ENABLING LEGISLATION OF THE STATE OF WASHINGTON

In 2019, the Washington State Legislature approved alkaline hydrolysis as a method of disposition, effective in May 1, 2020 along with cremation, burial, and natural organic reduction. It is called Alkaline Hydrolysis because the water solution usually contains base reagents that have a low pH.

RCW means the Revised Code of Washington (RCW). It is the compilation of all permanent laws now in force.

RCW 68.04.290

“Alkaline hydrolysis” or “hydrolysis.”

“Alkaline hydrolysis” or “hydrolysis” means the reduction of human remains to bone fragments and essential elements in a licensed hydrolysis facility using heat, pressure, water, and base chemical agents.

RCW 68.04.300

“Hydrolysis facility.”

“Hydrolysis facility” means a structure, room, or other space in a building or structure containing one or more hydrolysis vessels, to be used for alkaline hydrolysis.

RCW 68.50.110

Burial, cremation, alkaline hydrolysis, or natural organic reduction. Except in cases of dissection provided for in RCW 68.50.100, and where human remains are rightfully carried through or removed from the state for the purpose of burial elsewhere, human remains lying within this state, and the remains of any dissected body, after dissection, must be decently buried, undergo cremation, alkaline hydrolysis, or natural organic reduction within a reasonable time after death.

DEFINITION OF IMMEDIATE BURIAL AS PROVIDED BY THE FEDERAL TRADE COMMISSION

The body is buried shortly after death, usually in a simple container. No viewing or visitation is involved, so no embalming is necessary. A memorial service may be held at the graveside or later. Direct burial usually costs less than the “traditional,” full-service funeral. Costs include the funeral home’s basic services fee, as well as transportation and care of the body, the purchase of a casket or burial container and a cemetery plot or crypt. If the family chooses to be at the cemetery for the burial, the funeral home often charges an additional fee for a graveside service.
