Sir William Ewart Gladstone

Sir William Ewart Gladstone

William Ewart Gladstone first served as prime Minister of Great Britain starting in December of 1868 during the reign of Queen Victoria. He subsequently served variously as a Member of Parliament, Chancellor of the Exchequer, leader of the Liberal Party, and three more times as Prime Minister. Fiercely independent, Queen Victoria offered Gladstone an earldom, which he declined. The measure of this great man, in addition to his many accomplishments both in and out of government, is seen in numerous quotes for which he is famous.

Gladstone died May 19, 1898 at Hawarden. and was buried in Westminster Abbey.

Gladstone quotes-

“Nothing that is morally wrong can be politically right.”

“Justice delayed is justice denied”

“We look forward to the time when the power to love will replace the love of power. Then will our world know the blessings of peace.”

“You cannot fight against the future. Time is on our side.”

“Be happy with what you have and are, be generous with both, and you won’t have to hunt for happiness.”

“Show me the manner in which a nation cares for its dead and I will measure with mathematical exactness the tender mercies of its people, their respect for the laws of the land, and their loyalty to high ideals.”
