James William “Bill” Campbell

James William “Bill” Campbell, born September 18, 1943, passed away on September 13, 2026, at the age of 82.

Bill was born and raised in Connecticut, the son of James and Celeste Campbell. He graduated from Johns Hopkins University and went on to found and operate Celestial Software. Whether solving a complex problem, considering his next move at the bridge table, or delivering a perfectly timed pun, Bill brought a quick and lively mind to everything he did.

Bill’s competitive spirit was evident throughout his life. In his younger years, fast cars were his passion. He raced open-wheel formula cars through his 20s and 30s, including Formula C, Formula B, Formula Vee, Super Vee, and Formula Ford. He won SCCA Super Vee National Championships in 1966 and 1967 and finished second in 1972. Bill also loved telling stories about his entry in the legendary Cannonball Baker Sea-to-Shining-Sea Memorial Trophy Dash in 1979. He finished 26th in the cross-country race from New York City to Los Angeles.

An accomplished Bridge Master and avid player, Bill brought skill, strategy, and enthusiasm to the game. He cared deeply for his siblings, Howard, Sally, and Andy, and for their children, who held a special place in his heart.

Bill will be remembered for his intelligence, independent nature, deep love for his family, sharp sense of humor, and many remarkable accomplishments. He will be deeply missed by Carolyn, his beloved wife of 42 years; his daughter, Catherine Nyhan-Baumann; his siblings and their children; and the many family members and friends fortunate enough to have known and loved him.
