Darryl William Sutherland Sr.

November 30, 1936 – March 15, 2026

Darryl William Sutherland Sr., age 89, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2026, in Kirkland, Washington.

Born in Hartford, Connecticut, Darryl moved with his family to Fort Lauderdale, Florida during his childhood, and later lived in the Los Angeles, Portland, and Seattle areas, where he built a life centered on family, work, and community.

Darryl built a life defined by dedication to his family, a strong work ethic, and a deep appreciation for life’s simple joys. He was a devoted Catholic who lived his faith quietly and consistently. He enjoyed a successful 30-year career in banking before retiring early. Never one to sit still for long, Darryl returned to the workforce, contributing his time and talents to Eddie Bauer and later Redapt Systems before retiring fully.

Darryl was a man of many interests. He loved reading, especially history, and had a deep appreciation for music—ranging from classical and marches to opera and artists like Paul Simon and Billy Joel. He dabbled in guitar and had a remarkable ability to remember song lyrics and classic jingles. He was also an avid sports fan and gave his time to umpiring Little League and coaching youth sports.

More than anything, he was a devoted supporter of his children and grandchildren, rarely missing an opportunity to cheer them on. In his later years, he found joy in simple pleasures—ice cream, Coca-Cola, Dick’s Drive-In cheeseburgers, red cars, and time spent with family. He also had a great sense of humor and loved classic comedians such as Bob Hope, Milton Berle, Groucho Marx, and Johnny Carson. He will be remembered as a quiet gentleman—trustworthy, fun, caring, kind, steady, and respectful in all aspects of his life.

He is survived by his sons: Darryl Jr., Scott, Nicholas, Jeffrey, and Mark. He was preceded in death by his son, David. He is also survived by six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to Jeanne Sutherland for her thoughtful care and support during the final stages of his life. They also extend sincere gratitude to the caregivers from Home Helpers of Kirkland for their compassionate care, reliability, and support over the past year, which allowed Darryl to live life on his own terms in the comfort of his home.

A funeral service will be held at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Bellevue, Washington, on April 15, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.

Darryl will be remembered for his steady presence, his quiet strength, his humor, and the deep love he had for his family.
