Richard Elmer Zunker, a beloved husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully on February 20, 2026 with family by his side. He was 87.
Richard was born in Wausau, Wisconsin, on August 5, 1938, to Elmer and Pricilla Zunker. He graduated from Wausau High School in 1956 and joined the United States Army Reserves. After fulfilling his military duties, he went on to graduate from the University of Wisconsin in 1964 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Secondary Education.
In 1962, Richard married the love of his life, Constance “Connie” Paul. Together they built an unwavering partnership full of love, laughter and the adventures of raising two sons, Paul and Hans. Their marriage was a steady and enduring example of commitment and care.
Although Richard, affectionately known as “Dick”, initially dreamed of becoming a high school history teacher and baseball coach, his path ultimately led him to the insurance industry. Rising through the ranks Dick settled in the Seattle area where he worked for Safeco Life Insurance for over 20+ years. Throughout his career, he and Connie were afforded the opportunity to travel the world. They enjoyed visiting places such as Hong Kong, Sydney, Switzerland and Greece to name a few. Dick retired in 1998 as Chief Executive Officer of Safeco Life Insurance.
Away from work, Richard enjoyed golf, tennis, card games and valued time spent with family and friends. After retirement, he especially loved traveling to Indian Wells, CA to enjoy the sun, winter golf and weekly trips to Costco for his favorite hot dog and diet coke.
Richard will always be remembered for his kind and gentle spirit, his sense of humor, and his steadfast devotion to his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Connie Zunker of Woodinville, WA; children Paul (Trina) Zunker of Mill Creek, WA, Hans (Georgialee) Zunker of Woodinville, WA, and three beloved grandchildren, Benjamin, Hannah and Megan.
He will be forever missed and always remembered with love.
