Marjorie Havist

November 6, 1931  –  April 23, 2025

Marjorie Victoria was the fifth daughter born to Victor and Lillie (Bross) Mulhollen in Johnstown, PA, November 6, 1931.

She grew up in Johnstown and graduated from Johnstown High School in 1949. She graduated from Bucknell University in June 1953 and married George I. Melhorn in August 1953.

Marjorie taught high school in Bethesda MD while her husband completed his education and graduated from the George Washington University School of Medicine in 1955.

The couple came to Seattle for George’s internship at Swedish Hospital and Marjorie found a job at Boeing on the Bomarc project in a data reduction group. Clarice MacDonald was her lead engineer and they became life long friends. There were years of training for George in Colorado, Toronto and Quebec, Canada. The couple returned to Seattle and George became a staff physician at The Tumor Institute of Swedish Hospital.

George passed away in 1962 as a result of a brain tumor, first diagnosed while a student in medical school. Marjorie earned a MAL from the University of Washington, School of Librarianship in 1966 and was the librarian on duty the first evening Bellevue Community College held classes in Newport High School. She was given leave from BCC to work for the Washington State Library, representing all the community colleges in the state on the development of the Washington Library Network.

Marjorie married Ewald J. Havist in 1969 and the couple lived in Bellevue and Mount Vernon. They had many happy times on Marwald Farm.

Marjorie also held administrative positions at Seattle Central Community College and retired from the Skagit College as Dean of Library and Media Services. She was the first woman to have earned the title of Associate and later Dean at the college.

She was a member of Phi Theta Kappa, Alpha Chi Omega, the David Douglas Chapter of the D.A.R. and honored by the publisher Marquis.

She leaves behind her beloved children, Susan Lynn West, Bradford George Havist and their children Jennifer, Kelly, Lindsay and Brennan as well as 3 great grandchildren.
