Richard L. Shane
Richard “Rick” Lawrence Shane, 70, passed away on February 19, 2025, in Kirkland, Washington. Born on April 1, 1954 in Seattle, Washington, he was a graduate of Nathan Hale High School, Class of 1972. Rick lived a life filled with adventure, resilience and a deep love of the water.
Rick worked at the Carnation Company, where he made ice cream, and most recently as a yacht broker at Signature Yachts in Seattle, WA. His passion for sailing was evident in his beloved boat, “Clear Horizon,” which he not only sailed but also called home for a time in his younger years. Whether navigating open waters or enjoying the tranquility of the marina, sailing remained one of his greatest joys.
Beyond the sea, Rick found excitement in skiing down snowy slopes, playing tennis, and indulging in computer golf games. He cherished time spent along the shores of Oregon and Washington, especially in Lincoln City, Oregon. He also enjoyed visiting casinos and embracing the thrill of the game. His adventurous spirit was matched by his determination-he faced health challenges over the past nine years with remarkable strength and perseverance.
Rick is survived by his wife, Irene Retel, who was the love of his life; stepchildren Deseray Regier (Lane), Jarvis Retel (Katharine), and Brenden Retel (Kriselda); and his beautiful granddaughters Ava, Eden, and Mya Regier and Alice and Ruby Retel. He is also lovingly remembered by his siblings Karen Somerville (John), Connie Grant (Dave), Mike Shane (Wendy), and Diane Ashby (Dave); as well as nine nieces and nephews and ten great-nieces and nephews. (He was the best uncle and Papa Rick to the next generations.) Additionally, he is survived by his stepfather Jim Vandervlugt and a large extended family and many friends. He was predeceased by his father, Robert W. Shane and mother, Barbara L. Shane Vandervlugt.
Rick’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. May the happy times he shared with family and friends bring comfort to all who mourn his passing.
