Anne Newell Koegler

(1934 – 2022)

Anne Newell Koegler was born the second of five children to Walter and Grace Newell in upstate New York in 1934. Her early years were split between the town of Whitehall, NY during school months and nearby Lake Hadlock and Lake George in the summers. She attended college at Russell Sage in New York and Mary Washington College of the University of Virginia where she earned a Bachelor of Arts.

Following graduation, Anne worked as a waitress at the Lake Placid Club where she met her husband-to-be, Joe Koegler (1932-2011), who was employed for the summer as a chauffeur.  She then took a position with the state of New York as a social services case worker, after which she left the country to study abroad in Denmark. Shortly after her return, she and Joe were married.

The young couple moved often during the 1960’s while Joe pursued a career in engineering and aerospace, and so their five children were all born in different cities. The family settled in Rhode Island for much of the 1970’s and then lived in the Marshall Islands for several years. There were subsequent moves to Massachusetts, Nevada, and South Carolina. Throughout it all, Anne was a tireless and resourceful homemaker who instilled in her children a love of knowledge, education, and the arts.

After their children were grown, Joe and Anne traveled extensively throughout Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, New Zealand, the Caribbean, and the Pacific Islands. They both were possessed of curious minds and believed in life long learning so they delighted in experiencing new cultures. In the early 2000’s, they relocated to South Carolina and began spending their summers in Nova Scotia, where they cherished the beautiful surroundings and warm community.

Over the years, in addition to raising a family and running a household, Anne taught cooking classes, volunteered, worked in retail sales, earned a design degree, and founded her own interior design business. After Joe passed away,  Anne devoted her time to fundraising activities and volunteering at a local school where she and her therapy dog, Mitchell, spent many happy hours reading with young students.

Anne loved gardening, cooking, art, music, literature, and history. She was endlessly patient, loving, and supportive of her family. She also had great affection for animals and oversaw the care and feeding of various family cats, dogs, horses, and ponies over the years. She will be remembered for her innate sense of fairness and equality, her wealth of knowledge on a wide array of topics, her good humor, optimism, limitless energy, and her strength and resilience throughout life’s many trials.

Anne passed away in December 2022 while living in Woodinville, WA. She is survived by her five children, three of her siblings, and her faithful Tibetan Spaniel, Mitchell. A memorial service will be held to celebrate her life during the summer of 2023.
