John Gregory Niehof

John Gregory Niehoff, age 59, passed away peacefully on Good Friday, April 15, 2022 at his home in Kent, Washington with family by his side. John was born July 29, 1962 in Seattle, Washington, son of Gilbert and Rose Mary Niehoff.

John was a beloved fixture at the Seattle Yacht Club where he worked in the maintenance department for almost 40 years. He could always be counted on to set up anything that was needed for the countless celebrations, weddings, and events that occurred daily at the Club. He was hardworking and dependable, missing only a few days of work over his entire career.  John was loved by members and staff alike and his presence will be missed by all.

When not working at the Yacht Club, John regularly helped his friend and brother-in-law Steve Harper with his contracting business.  He particularly enjoyed painting and took much pride in his work, taking special care to make sure every detail was perfect.  John was a good friend to all who knew him. He never turned down a request for help and he gave generously and selflessly of himself every day of his life.

John was happiest when he spent time with his son Nicholas and spent every free moment with him. Together they explored the ocean, the mountains, and nearby trails and parks. They spent countless hours at the family’s property on Lake Tapps swimming and playing. John’s highest priority was teaching Nick everything he knew and being the best father possible. John instilled in his son a deep appreciation and wonder of nature – both plants and animals – as well as a strong work ethic and commitment to personal responsibility. John considered fatherhood his most important role in life. As he approached the end of his days on earth, he obsessed with making sure he hadn’t left anything out that his son might need to know to navigate this world as an adult. He can rest peacefully knowing that he accomplished all this and more.

He is preceded in death by his father, mother and nephew, Jordan Hill. He is survived by his son Nicholas Niehoff, nephews David and Jonathan Harper, siblings Mike Niehoff, Mark Niehoff, Rita Harper, Gerald Niehoff, and brother-in-law Steve Harper. He also leaves behind his companion and soul mate of over five years, Karen Griffiths and their beloved dog Chance.  He will be missed by many, especially those who loved him. His memory will live on in our hearts forever.

A Celebration of John’s Life will be held Sunday, July 31st from 1-3 pm  at the Seattle Yacht Club, 1807 E Hamlin Street, Seattle, Washington. At the family’s request, no flowers or gifts. All who knew John are invited and your presence will be much appreciated as we share memories and stories of John’s life. Please RSVP to Nicholas Niehoff (son) if possible via email at nniehoff12@gmail.com by July 28th.

Too many memories to even start with. I had so much fun working with John. The husky brunches, commodores ball, opening weekend, weddings , just every day or night… He never ever got flustered or lost his temper at anyone. Trust me I pushed his buttons… I just adored him and going to work was always a blast with John. Nick, you had the best dad ever and he adored you. I will miss you my friend

John was one who I truly enjoyed seeing when I would work at the Yacht Club during the summer. Our conversations were natural and genuine. One such topic and connection was St Edward Parish and school, and how he attended school there during his younger years. I was so saddened to hear of his passing, but I know he is in a good place. You are truly missed. RIP John. Your friend, Noel Ramos

John and I started working at SYC about the same time. He was so sweet and kind, a little shy and very dedicated to doing a great job. My husband, Jim, was his boss and thought so highly of his work ethic, he was so dependable, always made it to work…even bringing his sleeping bag when it snowed in case his co-workers couldn’t make it to the club. His love for Nick was palpable and his pride in his son was almost tangible. John is missed by everyone who knew him.

John had a love for life and adventure, always eager to learn. I met John and Nick through, his friend of many, many years Allan in 2000, My kids and I were invited up to Lake Tapps property, to enjoy the day. John had the patience to take my kids on the zodiac and taught my son Jimmy to drive the boat. My daughter Jessy spent time with Nick playing in the water. Even took my kids Tricker Treating one year in Puyallup with Nick. When we lived in Kennewick John and Nick came over to visit. When my kids and I moved back to Federal Way, I would contact John off and on, to see how things were and how Nick was doing. I was shocked to hear of his passing. RIP John, until we meet again. Nick, sorry for your loss.

John was a very fun person who I met working at the nursery. He was always joking and very funny with a really kind heart and would make me laugh all the time. We went on to be very good friends and lived together for almost 10 years and went on many fun and crazy adventures. I will always remember him as a fun loving crazy goofy guy. He helped me do a lot of things and taught me a lot about guns and stuff, we had a lot of good times and I will never forget any of them!

I met John around 1982 at Furneys nursery, we worked together for a couple of years and became good friends. always great to hang out with, had a lot of crazy fun together. I had a mountain of respect for his kindness and great work ethic, It did not matter what job they gave us at the nursery, John always jumped in with a smile and drive no one could match. So sorry to hear.
