David Hayward

David Charles Hayward was born October 6, 1943 in San Francisco, California to John Hayward and Frances Leighton.

David was a man of strong integrity who was very loyal to family and friends. Mechanically inclined from an early age, he generously shared his aptitude for fixing cars and home repairs to help others. David had a stewardship attitude, favoring maintaining and caring for what he had rather than buying something new. An innovative thinker, he was skilled at improvising when he didn’t have the right parts for a job. One of David’s favorite interests was restoring and repairing antique pocket watches. David retired from Metro in 2011 after 26 years as a lead mechanic and was renowned for his quality work in the industry. David also sold Matco tools around the time of 1979-1983.

Some of David’s earliest and fondest memories were experienced on a ranch in Sonora, California near Yosemite National Park. It was there that he worked alongside his father, John Hayward, helping raise turkeys and cultivating a strong work ethic at an early age. When he lost his father, who was also his best friend at the age of 16, David continued to live and work on the ranch under the care of his aunt and uncle.

At the age of 18, David joined the Army and went to Europe where he became a crane operator. While stationed there, he took the opportunity to travel, eventually meeting his future wife, Jacqueline, in Orleans, France. Throughout his life, David made several trips to France with his wife and children to visit French family. He loved visiting the Loire Valley, fine-tuning his knowledge of its deep history with visits to the chateaux and museums of the region.

David took joy in giving his children, grandchildren, and countless relatives and friends memorable experiences. These adventures usually involved a boat trip to Eastern Washington for waterskiing, camping, fishing, stories, and lots of laughter. David also took great care of his mother, Frances in her older years. He defied the norm when he took her along on road trips to the Grand Canyon and the Oregon Coast well into her 80’s and 90’s.

David is survived by his loving wife, Jacqueline, of 51 years; son Paul of Seattle, daughter and son-in-law, Florence and Dale McFarlin of Juneau, Alaska, and his son Marc of Seattle, along with his grandchildren, Jourdain, Amanda, Alex, and Olivia, Fiona and Zhuji. He is also survived by his cousin and friend, Michael Graham of Portland, Oregon.

David passed away on October 30, 2018. His loving presence will be forever missed. David’s family is grateful to the caregivers of Evergreen Hospice for their compassion, loving care, and attention to detail.

Memorial service will take place on November 16^th at 11 am at St. Mark’s Catholic Church in Shoreline. A reception will follow.
