Mary Ann Hall passed into the arms of Jesus on May 28th, 2017 surrounded by her family. She died of complications from surgery to repair an abdominal aortic aneurysm.
Mary was born in Fargo, North Dakota to Michael and Edith Holland on August 23, 1931. Her parents moved the family to Seattle in 1942. Mary graduated from Garfield High School where she met the love of her life, HM (Hoddy) Hall. HM’s father observed the blossoming fondness between Mary and Hoddy and advised his son, “do not let this one get away!” Married on July 9th, 1952, they shared nearly 65 years together.
Mary and HM lived in Seattle briefly and settled on Mercer Island in 1958, where they raised their children. The family enjoyed summers boating in the San Juan Islands and treasured times at Hood Canal. Their adventures included traveling the country in their RV, as well as exploring the world through cruising.
Mary’s ambitions included acquiring a real estate license, soloing their Cessna float plane, designing and creating beautiful stained glass windows, becoming an excellent sharpshooter and, together with HM, running a very successful general construction business for more than 40 years. Mary had a love for books and was a voracious reader, always yearning for knowledge. She was passionate about her faith and has been an active parishioner at Evergreen Covenant Church for almost 40 years.
Mary is survived by her husband, HM, her children, William, John (Cathie), Susan Hall-Dowd, and Mark (Pat), her seven granddaughters, Jennifer (Chris) Pugel, Michelle and Kayley Hall, Analeise and Caitlin Dowd and Katie (Stephen) and Becca Hall, one great-granddaughter, Ava Pugel, sisters Gloria, Molly, Janice and Linda and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her sister Donna.
You were blessed if you received one of Mary’s heartfelt written notes containing a favorite scripture, sharing her deep love for the Lord. Mary will be remembered for her delightful, exuberant spirit, her warm, generous heart, her humor, her genuine compassion for others and her graciousness. She was a devoted and loving wife, mother and grandmother who is deeply loved and will be greatly missed by her family. Mary will be forever known as one of the most faithful and kind individuals on the planet.
Remembrances can be made to Salvation Army or Mary’s Place. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 24 at 11:30 am at Evergreen Covenant Church, 3200 – 78th Ave SE, Mercer Island.

I met Mrs. Mary Hall in 1970 when I moved to MI with my family. Sue and I were Cyclemate partners and fast friends. I went to the Hall’s house a couple of times every week during our high school years. Mary was always making something delicious to eat for hungry teenagers and even wrote to President Nixon to ask if he would like to interview 15 teens who crossed the US on their bikes. With Mary’s persuasion, of course he did! Anything for this enthusiastic Mom of all the young people she mothered. How sad and sorry I am for the Hall family who have lost one of the most loving, giving and Christ-like women I have ever known. May you rest in the arms of the Savior, Mary. Mary and HM were the owners of the home we lived in for 8 years on Mercer Island, but they were more friends than landlords. They were always looking out for us.
Mary would write cards with beautiful scripture verses for every occasion and leave them at our front door. Whenever we visited them, she would always end the visit with a prayer. She called our children ‘dear heart’. And there was always a smile on her gentle and beautiful face.
You will be dearly missed by your family, Mary, and by everyone who knew you. You left a mark on each one you touched with your loving presence and friendship. We will all miss you. Rest in the peace of Christ and may all the family be consoled by His love.

I met Mary on a visit to my sister Sarah’s family back in 2011..and meeting Mary was like discovering a long lost, cherished sister in Christ Jesus. My heart beats for Jesus, she said..and how much strength her faith filled life has given me in some of the most difficult years of my life. Thank you Mary,so much, for all the years of loving support though your letters and notes…May your heart be filled with joy in our Saviour’s Presence!
Mary and Hoddy were among the involved and courageous parents who encouraged and supported daughter Sue to challenge herself and ride her bicycle across this great land. Mary was so helpful to me, the accompanying adult, offering wisdom and a “get it done” attitude. To top it off, she arranged for us, Cyclemates II, to ride our bikes to the White House and to meet with the President in the Oval Office. Mary was the perfect combination of kindness and firmness. RIP, dear Mary.
Mary and HM have been a force in the lives of many children in our ministry. Traveling down to tell them she has passed will cause tears, but they will be assured she is with Jesus. Mary, God has you in heaven now to celebrate the love of who you are and so many of us are going to miss the seeds you planted in our lives and the lives of others we may never know.
