Merna Joyce Hjelt
EDMONDS — Merna Joyce Hjelt, long-time resident of Naselle, passed away on Tuesday, October 13, 2015, in Edmonds at Aldercrest Nursing Home after a long battle with Parkinsons.
Merna was a doll maker, enjoyed making crafts, ran a daycare, was a Sunday School teacher, as well as working for the Washington State Domestic Violence Crisis Line for 25 years. She was a wonderful sister, wife, mother, grandmother, aunt, sister-in-law and friend. She had a deep faith and was a devoted member of the Naselle Assembly of God church.
Merna will be lovingly remembered by her five children, ten grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, five nieces, and six nephews.
A private family ceremony will be held at Barton Funeral Home, 14000 Aurora Avenue, Seattle, WA, on Monday, Oct 26, 2015, from 3-4 pm.

You will miss your mother more than anything. It takes time to grieve, let it happen, don’t hold it in. Don’t blame yourself for things you did not do, let the good memories come through. Let her smile and love for you all be what lingers.
To James: I wish I could be there to help you through this difficult time. There is one thing you can be sure, she is in a better place. No one can replace your Mother, but if I can ever help you in anyway, just call me. I would be honored to be your adopted Mom.

Today I had to say a final good-bye to my mother. The one person who has been with me since I was even a thought. No matter how mad I was at her, she was always there. Now she’s not. It is very hard and I hope anyone who reads this either understands or will give their Mom a hug. You only have so much time.
Merna was my aunt and I loved her dearly. My father and I spent several weekends, over the years, visiting Clay and Merna; their house was filled with loving hospitality. I will always remember the spiritual conversations Merna and I had and eating her wonderful potato salad and watching her make dolls. Often, we played games and she would attempt to help me make a doll. Merna was a warm gentle person and was gracious when many members, of the Hjelt family reunions, joined in great fellowship at her house. My father (Oscar) and I, also, enjoyed attending her church at times. Oscar (100 years old in March of 2016) has watched most all his brothers and sister-in-laws pass away the past few years. Merna was the only sister- in-law left, and now he only has his brother (Cliff) left; however, we can all celebrate their lives, today, with wonderful memories, and we can feel blessed to know that they have peace and are rejoicing in heaven. We will all miss Merna very much.

She touched so many lives sharing her Christian faith in more ways than she would realize…not just in person but also through the phone calls on the Washington State Domestic Violence Hotline.
