Barbara Wemyss McLain
Barbara McLain, 95, went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on December 30, 2023, in Kirkland, Washington. She was born in Pasadena, California, on September 9, 1928, to Charles and Isabelle (Jackson) Butler, the second of their three daughters. She studied at Pasadena Junior College, DePauw University, and Katharine Gibbs College in Boston. Through the latter, she found work with the U.S. government overseas, an early dream of hers. She served in Washington, D.C.; Stockholm, Sweden; and Athens, Greece; loving every minute of it.
Barbara returned to the U.S. in the mid 1950s and married the love of her life, John McLain, in 1961. They raised their three children in California, Arizona, and South Dakota, before retiring to Colorado where they could enjoy the beauty of the mountains. In 2018 she moved to Washington state where she could be closer to family.
Barbara’s faith in Jesus Christ was the foundation of her life. A life-long Episcopalian, she was very involved with her church as well as PEO and other volunteer opportunities. In her last hours she was heard singing songs about her Savior Jesus Christ.
Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved John, her sister Mary, and brother-in-law Alan. She is survived by her three children Peter, Betsie, and Sue, Sue’s husband Bill, her sister Janet, Janet’s husband Donn, and numerous nephews and nieces and their families.
Services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 27, 2024, at Church of the Resurrection, 15220 Main St, Bellevue, WA. She will be interred in Colorado Springs later this year.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Voice of the Martyrs (www.persecution.com).
