Mary Marcell

Mary Brydson Marcell1935-2015

Our beloved mother, Mary passed away from us on Monday, April 20th in Kirkland at the Evergreen Hospice care center after a long struggle with congestive heart failure.

Mary was born and raised in Seattle, WA and graduated from Queen Anne HS in 1953. She attended the Griffin Murphy business college and thereafter in 1955 met and married John Marcell also a graduate of Queen Anne HS. Mary enjoyed working in the aerospace industry for over 35 years as a talented documentation specialist until her retirement in 1997.

Mary was ahead of her times balancing a family and career in the 1960’s. She raised six children and seemed to do it all effortlessly. She loved family meals at the table, was a great cook and always prepared enough for anyone that might be dropping by without notice; it was something you could count on. Mary was a strong capable woman in every endeavor she pursued. She was a self-taught artist in the field of stained glass, painting and fiber arts. She enjoyed carpentry and home design and built two homes. She was an avid golfer, skier, reader and gardener. Her most favorite love of late was her acclaimed sewing room where she spent many happy hours daily. And she loved all of her sewing friends she’d met over the years.

Mary was a good teacher, she taught her children to be independent and allowed them the freedom to explore and learn and grow rich in their own lives.  She was a good friend and listener. She loved and was loved and will be dearly missed by all who were fortunate enough to know her.

Mary is predeceased by her parents, David and Nora, her sister, Joanne Caswell of California and her husband of 28 yrs, John Marcell. Surviving relatives are her sister Marlene Brydson of Kent, her children, Lynn & Lindsey Yowell of Chelan, John & Donna Marcell and Mark & Jill Marcell both of Redmond, Terry & Alise Marcell of Woodinville, Tracy Price Zembruski & Mark Zembruski of Woodinville and Denise & Dan Stumpf of Kirkland. Grandchildren are Lindsey Yowell & Sarah Chase, Dusty Marcell, Drew & Miranda Marcell, Shelby Marcell, Janielle & Carl Linder, Chad and Ryan Makela, Julie Marcell, Preston Marcell, Cameron Price & Heidi Kimble, Christopher Price, Connor, Lexi and Nicholas Stumpf and 5 great grandchildren, Jordyn, Jaylin & Tillman Yowell, Jake Kimble, Emmie and Tristan Marcell along w/many loved nieces and nephews.

A private memorial for family and friends will be held on Sun May 10th from 11-2 at Heritage Hall in Kirkland at 203 Market ST

In Lieu of flowers donations can be made to Evergreen Hospice of Kirkland.

My prayers are with you all. Though I did not know Mary, her legacy is in the family she left behind. May the pain of today be lifted as your memories of your loving mother remind you of the joy she brought to your lives. Many blessings to you all.

Mary always amazed me. I don’t know how she managed to always be so calm with six noisy kids (plus two or three extra neighbor kids) swirling in and out of the house. I don’t know, maybe it wasn’t calm, but exhaustion. She managed to put tasty meals on the table, while making sure that the laundry got done; all with ease and a smile. I remember her Swiss steak and Wine Chicken and I learned to make both. I can remember her voice and her laugh.
I have nothing but good memories of the Marcell household and I hope you can all take comfort in those memories. She was a gem.

I attended Queen Anne with Mary but we lost touch until about 10 years ago. Shortly after she made my wife an apron that said across the front “Cookies are the friends of life” Mary was a friend and will be greatly missed.

I’m saddened for your loss. I remember the c elebration of Mary and my birthdays which were just a week apart and the fun we had going to the Rodeo. I know she has earned her place in heaven and thankful that she will no longer have any suffering or pain. I love you and the members of your family that I have had the pleasure of meeting so far (Terry and Mark). My thoughts and prayers of comfort to you!

To all of Mary’s family, all of my sympathy. Mary’s obituary described her so well…but cannot capture her wonderful laugh, her smile, or the generosity that poured out of her. I feel so lucky to have known her for so long. I will miss her, and will not forget the fond memories I have of her and the many times she welcomed me in to her home.
