Julie Elizabeth Hagel

Mothers-Day-2010On Tuesday December 30, 2014, at EvergreenHealth Hospice Care Center in Kirkland, WA, Julie Elizabeth (Vice) Hagel lost her battle with ALS just over a year after she was diagnosed. She was 39 years old. Julie passed away peacefully knowing that her friends and family would be there to support her husband Kyle and their beautiful children, Laura and Megan.

Julie was born on January 7th, 1975, in Ottawa, Canada to Ken and Jane Vice. After spending her childhood in Canada, her family moved to Lincoln, NE, where Julie graduated from Lincoln Southeast H.S. Julie went on to graduate from Drake University in Des Moines, IA with a Doctor of Pharmacy. It was at Drake where she met the love of her life, Kyle Hagel. Julie and Kyle moved to Washington State and were married on October 13th, 2001. Julie worked as a pharmacist at Kelly-Ross in downtown Seattle and also taught pharmacy students at the University of Washington during the years before her children were born.

Julie’s true joy in life was being a mother to Laura and Megan. She felt blessed to be able to stay at home to care for them. Julie enjoyed documenting everyday life through photos and journaling. She has left her girls a legacy of memories to help them remember so many wonderful times together and to feel connected to her deep love for them.

Left to cherish Julie’s memory are her husband, Kyle, children, Laura (8) and Megan (5), Kenmore, WA; parents, Ken and Jane Vice, Lincoln, NE; sisters, Katie (Grant, Leah, Howie) Trierweiler, Lincoln, NE, Erin (Jake) Anders, Palmer, AK; grandmothers, Evelyn Vice, Mary O’Neill, both Ontario, Canada; parents-in-law Gary and Susan Hagel; sister-in-law Angela (Brady, Annika, Sophia, Hudson, Kennedy) Ness, all of Bismarck, ND; and many friends and family members. Julie touched so many people with her kind and generous spirit, her love for life and the people in it. She taught us all so much about courage and grace over this past year. She will be missed by many.

A Celebration of Life will be held at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 16450 Juanita Dr. NE, Kenmore, WA on Tuesday January 6th at 2 pm. Memories and words of support may be left at Julie’s CaringBridge site, http://caringbridge.com/visit/juliehagel or below. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to the ALS Association (http://webwa.alsa.org ) or to the family for designation at a later date.

I never met Julie, but I watched her touching video about her journey with ALS on youtube this past summer. It both moved and educated me, and I am so sad now to hear of her passing. I admire your strength and courage, and my thoughts and prayers are with you and your family. Love
